I am trying to draw definite boundaries between VPM, VPL and VPS in thalamus. The one between VPL and VPM is pretty definite, but the VPL-VPS boundary is almost non-existent. In almost every paper where they have drawn boundaries between these two regions, there's no explanation on how did they decide it. Is there any definite pattern difference between these regions in CO, Nissl or AchE staining? Any research paper to suggest how to define boundaries?
VPL stands for ventral posterolateral thalamic nucleus, and what is VPS stands for?
I can think of only of a publication where you could quickly find this information, and it is "The Thalamus" by Edward Jones, 2nd ed., 2007. Otherwise I guess it will require a painstaking literature search.
Parvalbumin could define the ventralis posterior region VPM/VPL in rats, monkeys and humans. Even Nissl could work pretty well. Calbindin could define a new nucleus in humans, with a dense core and a halo (Blomqvist et al 2000; Brain) is this VPS region???
I presume you refer to the primate thalamus, since VPS is not found in non-primates. You sould try parvalbumin, calbindin, Nissl and CO in alternate coronal sections. I would expect parvalbumin-reactive neurons in VPL but not in VPS; and the opposite pattern with calbindin.
Thanks everyone for replies. I looked back at the confusion with VPS (ventroposterior nucleus, superior) and it seems that some important papers have different boundaries demarcation pattern. In Ed Jones papers and ‘The Thalamus, Vol-1 (should be most reliable) I don’t see VPS, so is true for George Paxinos’ rhesus monkey brain atlas (stereotactic coordinates). However, in Padberg J et al 2006, 2009, they clearly show VPS above VPL! In ‘The Thalamus (1997)’ Vol -1 by Ed Jones, page 34 (fig 2.2) I see VLp (Ventrolateral nucleus, posterior) in a similar position!!!
