Using some (X) amount of sodium nitrate, how can i calculate the amount of N-Nitrate? And while analyzing the sample N-Nitrate concentration by measuring absorbance (APHA), how can i calculate the concentration of N-NO3 using standard graph (Y=Mx+C)?
I think APHA describes the procedure for estimation of NO3-N in water. NO3-N is nothing but total nitrogen in the form of nitrates. The molecular formula of Sodium Nitrate is NaNO3 (MW= 85). Therefore, if you take 85 grams of NaNO3, the amount of N (NO3-N) contained in it will be 14. (MW of N2 = 14)
Therefore,weight ratio- NO3-N/NaNO3 = 14/85
Similarly, you have 62 grams of NO3, then you have 14 grams of NO3-N in it.
Therefore, NO3-N/NO3 = 14/62.
Now if you have the concentration of NO3 in grams, convert it easily into NO3-N using above ratio.
The atomic weight of nitrogen is 14.0067 and the molar mass of nitrate anion (NO3 - ) is 62.0049 g/mole Therefore, to convert Nitrate-NO3 (mg/L) to Nitrate-N (mg/L): Nitrate-N (mg/L) = 0.2259 x Nitrate-NO3 (mg/L) And to convert Nitrate-N (mg/L) to Nitrate-NO3 (mg/L): Nitrate-NO3 (mg/L) = 4.4268 x Nitrate-N (mg/L)
The NO3 concentration (mg/L)can be directly converted to NO3-N by dividing with 4.427. Conversely, the NO3-N can be converted to NO3 by multiplying with 4.427

So interesting, just what I was looking for. But, Do you know where I can get this information from a book or paper? I´ve been looking on APHA online, but no luck yet.
