Strongly agree with Prof. Whitehead. Please, be very careful in using any software or program for checking plagiarism as there are plenty of websites offering free checking of plagiarism BUT such activity is a serious threat to your article. I know so many people who the checked plagiarism of their article from free websites or software. Once you upload your document on such websites, it get stored on internet and when universities or any publisher check the plagiarism through Turnitin or other authentic program for that, it shows high level of plagiarism because your documents was already checked somewhere else. So please be careful in using any website or software for checking plagiarism.
Ithenticate is the best software to check for plagiarism in research.. It has access to many scholarly journals that are not free. I would personally go with Ithenticate over Turnitin.
An alternative answer to this question is not so much the software that is available - but the author should have some idea if they have plagiarised - whether intentionally or not. For instance, have they 'cut-and paste' directly from sources without changing their structure i.e. paraphrasing accurately (even if you have cited the source)? Keeping content the same or just changing a few words is poor paraphrasing practice. Too much direct quotation is also poor practice - even if within the rules and policy of academic integrity. Rather than rely so much on the software - it's good practice to know your institutions policy around academic integrity and review their resources on what it is and how to avoid breaches of academic integrity.

I agree with Prof. Whitehead that software is secondary to your efforts. You have to pay attention to fundamental principle of citation and quotation as well as pay attention to your institutional rules regarding plagiarism.
TurnItIn should be useful. Also, you can download Grammerly which will be integrated into word and will help you to not only deal with the plagiarism issue, but also assist with grammar.
There are numerous software tracking systems to check for plagiarism. Currently, my university prescribed to iThenticate and Grammarly because it gives you a clear indication how many words captured of another author in your work. It is for us compulsory to use the system because the university paying the licence to use the programme. It is a matter of ethics. It is not to say that you plagiarized but to cite those work implicated in the article. Another way to overcome this plagiarism issue is to paraphrase those indicated parts in your article.
