When viewed from the side, pure liquid or molecular solutions (colorless and colored) are optically empty, whereas in the case of a colloidal solution ( homogeneity of a nanofluid), uniform illumination of the illuminated region (the Tyndall effect) is observed.

SAXS - Small Angle X-ray Scattering.
It all depends on the size and nature of the periodicity or aperiodicity that you wish to monitor.
