The question is a little confusing: qe refers to an adsorbed quantity not a capacity. The adsorption capacity, Q, is the maximum of adsorbed quantity qeMAX.

Anyway, you should take into account all the free water VFREE=VSOLUTION+VPORAL, (what you called liquid + resin).

It supposes there is no adsorption of water because adsorbed water molecules are not "free" to take part in solvatation effects.

For example with langmuir type: qe = (C0-Ce)*VFREE/mDRY = Ce*K*Q / (1+ K*Ce)

qe = (C0-Ce)*VFREE/mDRY varies with C0. It is linear at low concentrations then decreases. You need the whole isotherm in order to extrapolate the capacity Q=qeMAX and K.

Hi Adam, I also agree with both Romain ad and Kalidhasan. qe refers to an adsorbed quantity. Since you want to know the qe of resin polymer, you need to know the dry weight of resin polymer and the removal quantity of pollutants. But I think that the free water in resin polymer should not been take into account, because eventhough the free water in resin polymer also store some pollutants, but which are not been adsorbed by the resin polymer and should not take into account when you calculate the qe of resin polymer. This was only a personal opinion.

If we do not include the water present in resin we will make a mistake, however in a view of the usually low concentration of adsorbent, it should probably be omitted.
