If there is a measured value of 22 percent for the efficiency of converting the heat of burning into electricity in incineration plant and you have the quantity of heat generated due to burning what is the problem then in calculating the electricity production from the intended waste.

Is the efficiency of the electricity in incineration plant are different from that of the real thermal electric generation plants.

If so, you can consider that the calculated quantity may be the maximum yield.

For one Kg one can produce an electricity= 8MJ x .22= 17.6 MJ/ 1000 x60x60= 4.8 kwh

In order to judge on this value, let us compare it with the electricity produced from other combustion materials:

1 kilogram of dry wood 5,3 kwh 19,0 mJ; 1 kilogram of coal 8,1 kwh 29,3 mJ; 1 cubic metre of natural gas8,8 kwh 31,7 mJ; 1 litre of petrol 9,1 kwh32,6 mJ; 1 litre of diesel-oil 10,0 kwh 35,9 mJ

The electricity generation depends upon the what type of waste you are using. Different waste have different calorific value. The CV of the waste depends on the composition of the waste. Waste with a lot of PVC has a higher calorific value then waste with less PVC and more paper. To estimate the calorific value of the waste mix you have, you can make an average on your composition.

A material can burn without supporting fuel when it has a calorific value of min. 14.4 MJ/kg, this is approximatly dry wood. To know the overall calorific value of the waste, you need to measure the calorific value or estimate by analyzing the composition. If there is no chemical reaction by mixing the different materials together, a weighted average of the different calorific values are a good approximate value for the CV of the waste mix. If the amount of waste is known, and the calorific value of the waste is known, it is possible to design the size of the incinerator and flue gas treatments system. The composition of municipal solid waste (MSW) influences the incineration process. The high heat value of some materials contained in the waste and their moisture content affects the capacity of the process. where LHV: MJ/kg, Waste flow: kg/d or yearly base

Additionally, just a comment about the R1 formula that you can find in the book attached along with much more information about waste-to-energy from MSW.

The R1 formula or criterion is used to determine when a waste combustion installation is a recovery operation or when it does not meet the R1 efficiency criteria threshold, a disposal operation (D10: combustion on land). The “R1 criterion” or the “R1 formula” is a non-dimensional figure based on the first law of thermodynamics (energy input = energy output) combined with political objectives (minimizing the demand for primary fuels).

The threshold value is 0.6 for plants operational before December 31, 2008 and 0.65 for plants beginning operations after December 31, 2008.
