The Nursing Work Index – Revised (NWI-R) was adapted to use in Brazil recently and I have some doubts about the instrument.
A four-point Likert scale was used in the NWI-R. The lower the score, the higher the presence of positive attributes, conducive to the practice of professionals.
So, I would like to define a specific score to indicate favorable professional practice environments and unfavorable environments among the NWI-R 57 items. How can I do this? Does anybody know any reference that defines a specific score to analyse the instrument items? All suggestions would be helpful.

I would ask first: if you have doubts about the instrument, how much work do you want to put into using it? It would be frustrating, at the least, to have the instrument shown to be faulty after you'd put hours into your project.

Jose, Could you elaborate a little more on your doubts about the instrument. The instrument used in the US was very strong in both reliability and validity, however, it might not be the same in another culture and I am curious as to what some of the differences might be. I have used this instrument to understand where my own staff were related to this and what needed to be fixed in my departments. One of the initial articles regarding the instrument explained the scoring mechanisms.

Thank you for your answer. The NWI was adpted and validated to use in Brazil in 2007. There are at least 2 studies available in english about the aplication of this instrument in brazilian hospital enviroment:

Mr.Jose, before implementing any tool it is must to compute reliability and validity. better to show your data to an expert in the field of statistics, he/ she may help you. managing the data is not recommended for dissertation
If you have doubt about the questionnaire, then you have to test for validity and reliability (could be face validity, split half reliability)
About analysis, Not sure if you have a total score for the instrument, if yes, then you will need to describe and compare between groups using parametric tests (e.g. t-test, ANOVA, etc)
If you dont have the total score, then you will need to analyze item by item and compare selected items with demo using Chi-Square as it will be categorical data.
