It is often said and believed that both emotion and passion are vital for a sensible human being irrespective of his/her profession. For a person who is a scientist by profession or the one who believes and lead a scientific and rational way of living and understanding, the same is supposed to be equally true. What is your perception and belief in this regard?

Emotion and passion can add fuel to one's progress in any field of activity. At times, it may block our thought process. It is really crucial how one handles his emotion.
In classical motivation theory, emotion or affect is considered a core element supplying the energetic source. Incentive theories of motivation assume that the anticipation of positive affect as a result of a person's action is the major driving force. Neurophysiological research has shown that without emotions it is impossible to make decisions because emotions indicate the incentive value. Passion is defined as a strong inclination toward a self-defining activity that people like (or even love), find important, and in which they invest time and energy on a regular basis. Thus, passion involves the affect component but in addition encompasses a broader self-actualisation component. Even the most rational scientist needs affect and even passion to focus on his research interest and invest a large portion of lifetime doing this.

It is often said that emotion is the energizer of any behavior. Can emotion - and passion -- you ask-- be linked to scientific and innovative research ? Do they have positive role or negative or both? As I see it, the more motivated you are to perform research, the more you are entitled to be innovator and creator in your field of research. The same is true when you are a professor. So, when you have a passion for teaching and research you tend to look for the unkown because, as a researcher, you are intellectually curious, and be, as a professor, more a mentor or organizer of learning experiences and situations than a simple tramsmitter of ready made or estblished truths. However, an extreme passion, so to say, can have a negative factor in both teaching and research, because such a passion can hinder your rationality, which is necessary for both teaching and research.

I do not consider myself as scientist or an expert to answer the question.
But from my idea, I can comment that emotion and passion is definitely required for creativity.
But it must be channelised towards dedication for the work with highest positivity. If it is fragmented or diverted even partially, then it will definitely hamper the full expression of creative power of a man.
We can easily feel or identify this from the experiences of our daily life.

emotions and passions are equally useful to research but sequence of role of emotion and passion is vice versa; it depends on scientist to scientist and place to place. My personal opinion is that if I am human then I must be emotional.
I agree with previous answer, without emotions no innovation but without passion may be innovation.
Passion is a prerequisite to one's success in life because passion is the main driving force behind the way we feel about our life and work. Therefore, it can be stated that passion and satisfaction are two sides of the same coin, and without them, feelings of happiness are transitory because there is nothing to make them last. A scientist needs to rely on his/her emotions and passion in order to explore the unknowns for finding out the truth. Therefore, positive emotions and passions constitute the bases of human endeavours without which even the expertise of scientists loses its value and true worth.
