How can aeration in a recirculating aquaculture system affect ammonia removal? Does it remove ammonia even with no biological treatment?

In an aquaculture with dense fish population ammonia accumulation should be removed using some treatments (using bio-filters). Fish farmers believe that aeration itself can remove NH3 even with no biological treatment.
