Captured marine white ponfret is very expensive, because its landings is quite less than demand. It is endemic to certain areas & not available at all marine landing centres. But the main reasons for its high value are: as compared to black ponfret, the latter putrifies faster than the white one - especially in tropical areas.Its edible part is quite substantial as compared to non-edible parts, as say only sole fish can compete in this parameter. It has least number of bones. The mouth to anus length is quite short & hence very easier to get it cleaned, as compared to others. It haswhite flesh - very much liked by consumers.

Sexes in Ponferts are never easily differentiated & a university in Japan & Vietnam have got success in its captive breeding. It required huge sea areas to culture them under control.
