Knowing fully well that organic carbon is not fully converted to inorganic substance in biochar, how then can biochar be used successfully as soil modifier in civil engineering soil stabilization?
i think that the pulverescent biochar can be used as other binders (cement, fly ash, blast furnace slag ect) mixed with contaiminated soil. On the other hand, the pulverescent biochar is advantageous to the microbes live
Difficulties with biochar or other products resulting from burning processes, that are decided to be used as soil stabilizer, are in the organic matter content. According to the EN 14227-4 the maximum value of loss ignition (1 hour) must be less than 10%.(test description in in EN 196-2).
In my opinion, Biochar is an alkaline material and can be used as an activator to activate pozzolanic reactions in industrial by-products such as fly ash, GGBFS etc. used as a soil stabilizers. Biochar may not directly be used as a stabilizer.
Recently I have done some experiments on the cyclic behavior of Biochar treated sand and silt. It indicates the biochar increases the cyclic strength of the sand and silt. So it can be sued as stabilizer itself.
