In 1998, I was part of a national study investigating the impact of immigration on Vancouver area's schools -- administrators, teachers, and others involved in education. One of the findings of that study was that despite policies that were in place, there was a lack of monetary, material, and human resources being made available to manage the influx of students from a variety of countries, the first (or second or third) language of which was not English. At that time, large groups of refugee children and adolescents would arrive at school on Monday morning with little to no additional support made available to teachers who were already heavily burdened with their daily responsibilities. I am wondering, is the situation much different today, given the recent influx of Syrian refugees? How are teachers feeling/managing/surviving/thriving?
