I am trying to find the difference between the two sources of silica to find the kind of impurities present in them. I am using these two sources for the synthesis of a catalyst.
How do these two differ in properties and amount of impurities?
Colloidal silica is typically formed from sodium silicate and contains significant amount of sodium (besides other impurities).
Fumed silica is formed by combustion silicon tetrachloride in a high temperature flame of hydrogen and oxygen resulting in the formation of small, nanometer sized silica particles (Cabosil, Aerosil) and will be very pure silica.
