We have the common conference formats of oral presentation (lecture, paper), poster presentation (traditional, e-poster, poster seminar), workshop, topic seminar etc.
How do you use these (or other mediums) to communicate knowledge & network in your field of study?
Let me know your a) Field of Study, b) Country, c) What mediums you use and how they are valued or perceived in your specialism, d) What you think of them in terms of value and efficacy?
My field of study is Microbiology! In India, we have research get togethers which are useful as platforms, to present our work and ideas, to listen to others , probably get some new ideas from the proceedings, exchange views and raise objections, if any! Generally we have resource persons giving accounts of recent advances in the theme field, discussions following, where people get doubts cleared. Depending on the available time, oral paper presentations take place, by new researchers , followed by discussions, which trains the researchers in facing queries, which , I believe, is helpful in open defense vivas! Poster presentation is arranged where posters are displayed and explained by the concerned researchers. A panel of judges decide the best oral and poster presentation and prizes are given at the valedictory function! Overall, if a person wishes to get something out of it, will definitely benefit :)) the food served is also an attraction! Breakfast, lunch , high teas, banquets are commonly organized, attended by the interested! If the span of the conference is more, a cultural program is organized , on one of the evenings, to display the features of that particular region! In India, language and culture changes every 12 kms and hence it is an interesting event! This is a common pattern here, hope I have been able to put it through, well :))

It instantly becomes apparent that with India being such a huge and populous country, simply traveling to a conference in another area is almost like traveling to another country, in terms of language, culture etc. Do your 'resource persons' draw their information from a global field (so do they tend to participate in international conferences abroad)? You mention the new researchers presenting & gaining benefit from the events, but what about the more established researchers - are these the ones more likely to present outside India (& receive funding to do so) - what do they think of the conference mediums?
I must say, that if I stayed within my own geographical boundary, I would not be exposed to half the information and ideas I get through acting internationally. I think that even platforms such as RG can make a significant contribution in that respect - even without obtaining funding to leave your own desk!
@ Nicholas, thank you very much ! Yes and we have lots to thank RG for ! It has been a great platform for interaction of all types, for me too! About coming abroad as resource persons, why not ?? I would be interested too:)) main problem is of funding , if that is solved, I think it will be great to interact internationally !
Oh yes, from what I have experienced, most of the resource persons are globally aware of the advances in their fields, so that's a positive thing :))
