I have - more or less in vain - searched for literature on variations in the prevalence of alcohol problems among priosners according to the type of crime thay have committed. Any suggestions?
Alcohol-related crime usually involves damage to people or property. Heroin-related crime - by addicts rather than major dealers - is usually acquisitive.
Alcoholism can also cause cerebral atrophy, which can add - especially in older alcoholics - to the loss of inhibitions that is a major factor in alcohol-related crime. Heroin doesn't directly cause organ damage, though it can damage the brain indirectly, if overdose causes severe hypoxia.

My guess is that the commonest and most important societal consequences of the disinhibitory effects of alcohol are in the young, from acute alcohol intoxication. However, society is in denial over this, eg in date rape.
I analyse data from a sample of prisoners, preliminary analyses indicate the prevalence of pre-prison alcohol problems (assessed using the AUDIT) is lower among sexual offenders (as compared to other priosners) and elevated among DUI offenders and those who have committed violent crimes. I have not found other studies that shed light on this issue...

BTW: Yunran and I tried to to look into the effect of alcohol in an inprisonment/treatment population in China. Unfortunate the alcohol vaiables sees to be problmatic for the anaysis... So i did not explain alot. You could have the abstract that we submitted for KBS.
