Can Seasonal migration change social and economic relations to migrant workers? If it is so, under which perspective. Despite sexual harassment, heavy work load, and the adverse health condition, migration is not always the menace. Though few researchers have argued that seasonal migration within a single context can simultaneously cause immense suffering and improve social relation from workers perspectives.
This is a thought provoking and fairly broad question. One way to understand the impact of migrantion is to separate professiona-category of migrants from blue collar workers. The influence is for the most pat positive for the educated professional workers ; may be negative for most BC workers.
Actually this question is based on my research work on seasonal out-migrants mainly manual labourers or blue collar workers. Influence is no doubt positive for the educational professionals but is it truly negative for the manual labourers and particularly seasonal out-migrants? Instead of being absent at origin place or villages for few months and engaging themselves in a harsh atmosphere to eke a livelihood. Are they really improving their socio-economic sphere? As robot application and AI used in agriculture and every field, the migration focus should be shifted from labor to be intelligent workers. Otherwise, in the long run, no country would like to feed low skill persons when they get older.
You are very true that it should be shifted from labours to intelligent workers. But we are forgetting the fact that, these manual labourers may be poor in educational level but very rich in their contribution towards society particularly the construction sector or the urban world, which can not be ignored. We can not search intelligence in a sections of society who are poor and can not afford two meals a day. By adopting this strategy somehow in a long run the economic profit (the savings), acquired and improved language skills (mainly learnt languages), new knowledge for e.g. a labour become a mason or a contractor, getting higher social status (educating their children, investing in their farmland and renovating their houses or building new houses) join the mainstream and live a happier life than before. If you learn from the beginning of this year, what happened in China, I will recommend this research should cover how to arrange these silent contributors first as early as possible.
Yes, those poor people when needed, they do a lot contributions. However, the employers are used to pay them "low".
From China, Japan, look at those people or young persons, they live in a small area in big cities. Where they live, the space does not allow them to sit straight or stand erect, have all personal needs be put in their living space. Who cared about their life needs?
As a city's construction ended or form be mechanized or become a robot and AI controlled, where to arrange those people? As nowadays technology advanced, it might be only a decade period to get the change. Those people could be homeless and be forgotten by their employers. They will be discarded by the society that they had contributed. There is no voice for them in general.
