I need clear definition or difference between a 'co-product' vs 'by-product'.
For instance, Jatropha cake is generally referred to as a 'co-product' of biofuel industry, while Corn gluten meal as a 'by-product' of wet-milling industry. However, at some documents, these have been used interchangeably as synonyms.

a co-product is produced along with with a main product which is having equal importance as that of the main product. But by-product is not a planned product and is having less economic importance. again by-products in agricultural background are having some deleterious factors and need to be processed before use. in most of the instances Co-products are planned products and are used in the same industry people to gain some economic importance but mostly byproducts are less utilized and mostly they are underutilized.
Generally the two expressions ( 'by-product' 'co-product' ) have the same meaning but 'co-product' is more related to bio-fuel production.

A by-product is a substance or object, resulting from a production process, the primary aim of which is not the production of that item. By-products can come from a wide range of business sectors.
Main difference between these two is "costing" A co-product has a reasonable price while a by-product has low(minimal) price.
In Agro-industrial processing terminology: We can conclude that a co-product is of highest nutritional quality as compared to that of by-product. Co-products are mainly used for human consumption, while by-products are of inferior quality , may be used for animal feed; because a by-product is more or like a waste material resulted while processing of main product (after obtaining of co-product).
Eg. In case of Corn processing; Corn flour, corn oil, etc ., are are co-products, while those products which are made or prepared out of the left over material or waste materials of corn processing, per say husk, corn chunks and other waste parts that results in to by-products. , Corn cake which is obtained after extracting of oil from corn, Corn meal which is meant for animal feeding are by-products.
In fish science we use a co-product to promote marketing of the secondary product from fish. i.e. fish bones, fish guts, heads, fins etc are co-product= by-product.
