Hydrodistillation method is widely used especially for industrial production of essential oil (E.O.) because it is easy and fast. However, in some cases this method doesn't fit the desirable purposes. For example, in the case of Jasmine, the best way to isolate Jasmine E.O. is Enfleurage and Defleurage. Expression and Pelatrice are suitable for citrus fruits. Therefore, you have to take in your account which plant you will proceed with. Also, if you are looking for the high quality E.O., the is apparatus called Supercritical Fluid Extraction using CO2 but it is so expensive and it mostly used in experimental scale.
I think the question pertains to isolation of the main component of the essential oil from the essential oil. The question I suppose is not about the methods to isolate the essential oil from the aromatic plant (a question asked by Prof. Vinesh Kumar and a number of methods have been listed by RG members).
THE BEST TECHNIQUE IS SUPERCRITICAL FLUID CHROMATOGRAPHY (SCF). HOWEVER T=YOU NEED TO HAVE THE INSTRUMENT AVAILABLE IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO SEPARATE AND ISOLATED THE MAJOR COMPONENTS IN THE ESSENTIAL OIL UNDER STUDY.
Laboratory level fractional distillation units are available in the market and are operational. As far as the experimental protocol is concerned, it depends on the essential oil, its constituents and their boiling points.
The separation of purel molécules fro$ esseneiel oilwas performed by column chromatography. The solvent was benzene and ethyl acetate ratio (9/1) has proven effective separation by TLC, then the separation column. A drop of oil was deposited on the open column (L = 40cm, R = 2 cm) of silica gel (10cm). Fractions of 1 to 2 ml were collected. Monitoring the composition of the fractions was performed by TLC.
