we are doing a research on application of Hofstede model on students' career preferences in Croatia and Germany. It seems that the results are different in a few aspects of cultural context in both cases when we compare the results to total population Hofstede results. has anyone run into something similar?
The following paper might be relevant as it deals with the issue of Hofstede's values changing over time,
Taras, V., Steel, P., & Kirkman, B. L. (2011). Three decades of research on national culture in the workplace: Do the differences still make a difference? Organizational Dynamics, 40(3), 189-198.
Hofstede's original research was based on the questionable assumption that using a sample with a strong organizational culture effectively controlled for the interference of non-national cultural variables in responses. This was highly questionable as Brendan McSweeney convincingly demonstrates. If the questions are approached from the point of view of a familiar subcultural group - such as students - this is not the same as organizational culture as there are different dynamics in place , so Hofstede's erroneous assumption is even more unstable. Slavomir Magala discusses a range of reasons why Hofstede might be unreliable in these circumstances.

I am also not sure if you can use Hofstede's results as data for your experiments since it was recorded in organizational setting. Maybe it is possible to concentrate on other models that influence students' career preferences such as personality on the basis of Big Five or emotions on the basis of probabilistic Picard's HMM. There are significant discrepancies between scores of the Hoftede database and some actual research. I have an article analyzing the reasons for differences in the Hungarian setting, if you are interested, let me know and I forward it.

Dear Mirna, please find the article attached. It contains valuable info on the comparison of the results compiled based on the Hofstede database, contrasted with the results of Varga, a Hungarian researcher. It shows some remarkable differences (distortions of the Hofstede material in my opinion). The author of the article is one of the leading experts of Hofstede studies in Hungary.
