I am working on direct non-oxidative methane conversion at higher temperatures. My feed is a mixture of methane-Argon.
I have two fixed bed reactors, SS-316 with 5-micron frit and Quartz reactor with 40-90 micron quartz frit. A frit is a porous disc which supports the catalyst bed, especially in a vertical configuration. The feed gas flows top-down through the catalyst.
In the past, I have also used Quartz wool to support the catalyst in between.
My problem is that methane decomposes on all the catalyst supports mentioned above, which should not take place.
Does anyone have any suggestion or solution?

You could try using silicon carbide (SiC) grit for the same. Though, it should not happen on quartz grit as well.
If methane decomposes at high temperature in inert surroundings you should blame it on thermodynamic instability. So, any contact material will lead to its faster decomposition in elements. The only way to retard decomposition is to do without any hot materials and dilute with steam and oxygen. What is your purpose? Do you want to form hydrogen, or carbon with specific qualities?
