With the advancement of technology in nuclear physics and information systems which devices can aid in high-performance quantum computing? I read that quantum accelerators can provide significant improvement in speed and efficiency. What could be the specification of such an accelerator? Are there other devices present or hypothetical that can replace a quantum accelerator for more the same or maybe better quality output?
The most promising methods for quantum computing these days are based on superconducting qubits and ion trap qubits. These devices are being developed by Google, IBM, and a startup company called IonQ (among many others). There has been remarkable progress in recent years on building quantum computers but they are very far from general purpose (fault-tolerant) quantum computers that are predicted to give remarkable speedups for factoring integers and simulation of quantum systems. In the near term, there has been much investigation into an approach called variational hybrid classical-quantum computing, in which the quantum computer is used to help for a very special purpose in an optimization task.
