American satire has now developed into a new genre--Gallows Humor. The difference is that satire represents a particular point of view, but Gallows Humor does not. Gallows humor criticizes all points of view. Examples include John Irving's THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP, Joseph Heller's CATCH 22, Ken Kesey's ONE FLEW OVER THE COOKOO'S NEST, etc. Here is a PowerPoint about American satire.
