Try using ALE Adaptive Mesh for the regions where you expect large distortions in your model. Under Step Module, you can find ALE Adaptive Mesh.

- did you calculate the element length which must be used?

-are you using consistance unit (N, N7mm, ton/mm^3, mm/s)?

- Step BCs Loading is well definied? 

if yes, you should be having oneof those problems:

- Velocity is too high?!  wave propagation speed in an element which is directly connected to the element length and density.

-Contact Problem?!

i would increase the analysis time. Please do not forget to control if kinetic energy is 0.1 of total energy to ensure results accuracy. if problem resist go to .odb and see what happend by checking contact or other boundries definied.
