may be you should mark reared sea urchin and put them into wild condition to compare with the wild sea urchin. And also take wild sea urchin and put them in artificial conditions to compare from the both side

Paracentrotus lividus that is an herbivore keystone species in mediterranean sea.

So, what is the hypothesis that you would be testing? that sea urchins in the wild are able to recognize or respond to a wider number of stimuli than those in the lab because they have never been exposed to them??

Then we would have to assume that certain responses are "innate" but others “learnt”, right?? that could be an interesting experiment...

I'm sorry for late reply....your hypothesis is interesting but some pitfalls in the proposed methods seem to be appeared...are you sure the recruits are able to move across the sand toward the rock? It would be possible that the predators eat the recruits before they reach the rocky habitat!! Another question is how to separate the stimuli from each other in the field…. Do you have any solution? Let me know

I davide! sorry to answer you so late. Recruits started moving from a point zero in the centre of a circular rock platform of 60cm diameter. We recorded their tracks form this point for a maximum of 15 minutes. We found that wild recruits go out the platform in less then 3 minuts while lab recruits spent more time, 2.3 minutes more. We also did a control shielding sun and horizon and both of type stay disoriented. We recorded more or less 50 individuals for type and treatment and we were able to estimate "enviromental perception" in general and to esclude the clues left from tprevious individuals and topography
