The project requires the design of an electrical appliance control system. The system is to be operated through a mobile-based graphical interface. The object of the design is to control 1000 W 230 V fan based on the temperature and humidity of the environment. The AC fan should have three speed levels that correspond to three energy consumption levels.

The first step is to make a decision on the fan motor.
- Do you have any input there ?.
- In my opinion, looking at what is done in washing machines, the possibilities are:
a. Collector motor with the field windings in series/parallel.
b. An asynchronous motor steered by a MOS bridge or an IGBT bridge
c. A permanent magnet motor steered by a MOS bridge or an IGBT bridge.
- The simplest is a. I think to control that, you need a controlled rectifier.
(4-element recifier, whereof 2 diodes and 2 thyristors. The conducting angle of the thyristors
is controlled. If it needs to be decent, you may need to add a power factor correction circuit.)

You can make use of a controller such as Arduino or pre-programmed Thermal Controller which at least has 1 Analog Input (for the thermocouple/thermal sensor) and 3 Digital Outputs (for three level of speed control).
Each Digital Output will be programmed to output based on different temperature level. Each of those Digital Input will then be run into three separate Relay with DC coils, where as the Relay's NO/Switching pin will act as the switch for the Fan's AC power supply (ensure that the relay amperage rating is in-line with your fan amperage).
Each of those three NO pins will be run through a combination of resistors and triac before supplying to the load/fan. The difference in resistance value of each resistance will proportionally reduce the supplied voltage and hence the fan's speed as well.
