I just need clarity between mixed and multi-methods designs. I have read several articles through which some use the terms interchangeably and others posit a possibility of having a multi method quantitative or a multi method qualitative design.

Multi-method is when you use different methods and techniques in the same research project.
For example in a qualitative research you can combine individual interviews, unstructured observation and drawings (all qualitative methods and techniques). Combining methods is very common in qualitative research. It is also called triangulation.
You could do the same in a quantitative research. For example combining experiments with surveys or surveys with structured observation (all quantitative methods and techniques).
Mixed-method is when you use qualitative and quantitative methods and techniques in the same research project. For example surveys and group interviews.
