I have already conducted an in-depth interview and am looking for analysis tools to write it up as a case study. I have come across Biographic Narrative Interpretative Method (BNIM) as an analysis tool but am aware it also comes with a specific type of interview process. So I was wondering if I could only use the analysis stage of BNIM. Also my thesis is phenomenology in nature, therefore is using BNIM a suitable analysis tool for this particular study?
In my opinion, BNIM could be used as an analytical tool, because with BNIM the data is interpreted. Whatever it is, data collection and data analysis are different in qualitative research, so the method used should not be the same. In addition, qualitative approach is a multi-method approach as a form of validity and reliabiltas research conducted. You should read his book Guba and Lincoln, as a clear reference. I also often do so, as triangulation forms also strengthen the process of data collection and data analysis. The more frequently used, in the end we are increasingly able to sort and choose the variation of both data collection methods and data analysis (which is in the same approach that is qualitative). Hi Holly! I agree with August, data analysis and data collection are different tasks in the process of qualitative research, therefore you are not obliged to use a single approach for both stages. However, you have to be aware that BNIM is designed to collect and analyze narrative data, therefore if you don't have this kind of data in your interviews you could be stretching too much this method. Maybe you could say that you take from BNIM the phenomenological facets of it (yes, it takes into account this dimension), while recognising you don't apply it fully.

Admittedly, BNIM as an analytical tool helps researchers to gain a fully psycho-societal understanding of the topic under investigation because they offer researchers the advantage of a firm evidential basis for enhancing the validity of the research outcomes. It is generally suggested that BNIM is particularly powerful when integrated with other qualitative methods such as observation , interview, retrospective commentary, etc. The reason is that methodological triangulation can greatly reduce the likelihood of subjectivity thus increasing the credibility of the findings. In point of fact, the whole case comparison of the targeted participants can result in a grounded description of the object under study . On this basis, it would be practical to use the combination of both the interview and BNIM to make the outcome more objective.
