I'm currently writing my dissertation and very stuck on the statistics. I aim to examine the change in carbohydrate oxidation experienced in men and women at high altitude and sea level. I aim to do this for 2 time points during exercise in each condition. I assume I am to perform a 2-way repeated measure ANOVA (in SPSS 26). Please can someone help me how to perform and interpret this statistical test? Thank you in advance.
What I am currently doing:
Adding each time point separately so for the first hour I am adding "time" as the within subject factor name and adding 2 levels, then clicking define. I then add the sea level 1 hour" and "hypoxia 1 hour" data in the within subjects variables box and add "gender" into the between subjects factors. Is this correct??
You have a 2x2x2 (Sex x Altitude x Time) design. Sex is a between-Ss factor and Time is a within-Ss (or repeated measures) factor. But it is not clear to me whether Altitude (sea level vs high altitude) is a between-S factor or a repeated measures factor. Which is it?
In either case, your options with SPSS are to use GLM (Analyze > GLM > Repeated Measures) to obtain a classical mixed design ANOVA, or the MIXED command (Analyze > Mixed Models > Linear) to use a multilevel modeling approach. You can find examples of both on the UCLA website and elsewhere. Try a search on , for example.
Altitude is within subjects I believe in that both the men and women were required to exercise at both sea level and simulated altitude, thank you
Esme, I would suggest that you acquire two books, Montgomery Design and Analysis of Experiments and Lander R for everyone, both in the z-library. Read the appropriate sections. These include factorial designs and repeated measure. Google ANOVA as regression.and then look at appropriate sections of Lander reference. While this looks complicated it's really not and it's much simpler than your current path..As a chemist myself I would recommend it strongly.
