It depends on your test data which of the different isotherm models will fit. I think that mechanistic models are appropriate in your studies; a good overview on mechanistic sorption models is given by “Limousin, G., Gaudet, J.-P., Charlet, L., Scenknect, S., Barthes, V., Krimissa, M. (2007)Sorption isotherms: A review on physical bases, modelingand measurement. Applied Geochemistry 22 (2007) 249–275”; (full text can be requested via RG). For a first assessment of sorption data I would recommend the Langmuir approach. It is useful for the evaluation of batch experiments. Precondition to use the Langmuir approach is the determination of initial concentration in solution, final (equilibrium) conc in solution, weight of solid sorbent, and solid-liquid-ratio.The Langmuir equation can easily and very transparently be derived from establishing the equilibrium between adsorption and desorption kinetics, by this finally yielding a linear equation. The equation provides an assessment of the distribution coefficient K (offset of line), and the maximum sorption load of the solid (S∞; by slope of line). The equation is: “c/S = c * 1/ S∞+ K/ S∞”; (with: i) c: mass of species in solution after equilibration (mg/L); ii) S: mass adsorbed on solid (mg/kg). Mass of species c is determined after equilibrium is attained; mass S adsorbed on solid is generally calculated by transferring the loss of species in solution (due to adsorption) to mass adsorbed on solid. Therefore, the knowledge and/or determination of species initially present in solution is required as well as precise weight of solid, and solution volume used in experiment. Using outcomes and data of your experimental series yields (hopefully) an approximately linear scatterplot of c/S-values (y-axis) vs. c-values (x-axis); S∞and K can be derived from slope and intercept of fitted regression line. The Langmuir results (S∞;K)are not only a first approach to mechanistically describe retention; their assessment is also crucial for the design of experiment series in order to achieve more sophisticated retention models.
