Here are brief responses to your questions in addition to what earlier researchers have given.

How do I design my electrocoagulation reactor?

There are simple low volume EC reactors that you can buy at less than 300$. For lab-grade experiments, you can also fabricate an EC; the major components are electrodes (aluminum plates, steel, zinc, titanium, etc), EC reaction vessel (you can use cylindrical Plexiglas beaker), DC/AC power source, electrode holder, magnetic stirrer, and bar, connecting wires, pH meter, conductimeter.

What are the parameters to take into account?

---Before each treatment, to avoid a passivation film, the electrodes should be were rubbed with sandpaper and clean aqueous acid and base simultaneously.

----- EC efficiency is strongly related to the dissolution of the electrodes; therefore, electrode surface area and configuration/ geometry of electrodes are very important.

------ The inter-electrode distance affect EC efficiency.

------- The stirring speed affect EC efficiency.

------- Current density

--------The arrangement of electrode connections affect the treatment and various articles have shown that different electrode arrangements have different treatment efficiencies.

------ Mode of treatment like batch or continuous operations has an effect on EC efficiency.

----- Type of electrode also affect EC; in most of the EC reports, the electrodes (anode and cathode) are made of the same materials. Aluminum is commonly used but has drawbacks like toxicity, cost, and many others. Several studies have replaced with an iron electrode which is slightly cheaper. Also, metal oxides as an anode in combination with sacrificial anode materials have been applied to improve flotation.

-----Type of power supply: EC may be operated via DC or AC mode. DC supply causes oxidation/consumption of the electrode and cathode passivation; which may be prevented. AC does not cause passivation and few studies have reported higher efficiency via AC provide both electrodes are made from the same material.

------Solution pH affect the solution conductivity and dissolution of the electrodes.

How do I start?

Get the EC SET-UP, you can start with a simple configuration and put the above-mentioned factor in mind. Read and understand the EC mechanism from the various textbooks and research articles (some of it already listed for you by other posters). Start with easily reported water pollutants, play around with the factors affecting EC, and see how the EC efficiency varies. Then see how you can improve the EC efficiency by optimizing the variable factors.

For me, as my experience in the electrocoagulation treatment, this process has very complex mechanisms and depending on your working conditions, the factors influencing the trends can vary, so you should pay special attention to it.
