You will need good supvervision for your dissertation project. Hence, I strongly reocmmend to talk with your local professors to see what their research interests and current projects are and how you could fit in. This will automatically make your work more relevant and your dissertation phase more fruitful.

I would think that Special Education as a topic might be too broad: maybe you could start to narrow your focus down on a specific area like literacy, numeracy, or behavioural issues?

the area or the coverage of the speial education should be specifically mentioned. May be dyslexia for example. Then which languege. It should be further narrow down. May a a second language like English.

If you have access to some various academic journals and recent dissertations/theses related to special education (also search for "inclusive education"), a great place to start is to skim titles. What jumps out to you? what peaks your interest? From that point, you can review the abstract and see if it pulls you in further. Then you can move forward with the ones you are intrigued by and for the dissertations/theses a common point included in the final pages are suggestions for future studies. This is exactly where you can add a study, and then reference back to those authors indicating how you are helping to fill those gaps. Good luck!

Thank you i was successful in selecting a topic and my professor says i am off to a good start! i have selected to conduct a qualitative single case study that interviews special education teacher persistence and retention in the field. My goal in conducting this research to add the the community of scholars insightful resource that will provide strategies to inservice and service teachers as they strive to remain in the special education field of work. My professor says that i need to narrow down my research, any suggestions ? or maybe anyone knows journals that i can work with that can support this type of gap. currently I was able to select this idea from the following article:

Selecting a topic depends on many factors some of which are case specific. The best advice therefore is to read recent journal articles in the area you intend to work on and consult your potential supervisor, as Nicola Döring suggested. Supervisors are mostly interested in and working on a specific research niche that you can get a slice of.

Anna S. CohenMiller makes good suggestions about finding your "gap" in the literature. I also suggest thinking back across all of your coursework and asking yourself what topics interested you most. That may help you narrow down the area in which you look for your gap.
