I would like to ask what is the effect of the color coded labels for the different sedatives, analgesics and Paralytic agents as continuous infusion on the staff satisfaction and patient safety during the critical situations.
Universal color coding for high risk drugs has become a standard of care in many hospitals. We have clear evidence that it does prevent harm by reducing mixup of drugs or inadeverant injection to patients. JCI also recommends color coding of anesthetic and sedative drugs.
What we do in our ITU is stick a clear label near the patient end of the infusion line so any attending health care worker is able to identify.
Better to have a permanent colour coding and new staff should be educated. Epidurals should better be coded with a contrasting colour to avoid intravenous injections.
Should consider colour blindeness status of the staff.
