It is well known that processing submission is a long journey. However, I experienced once my submission was shown as "sent out for review" for more than two years until I asked, they responded that they had forgotten my submission. By that time, all the data was outdated.
Therefore, now if every procedure like admin check -> with the editor takes longer than expected, I will send them an email to check.
Any similar experience?
Some times this happens. personally I have experienced it in different occasions, and far at the other end, unlike this, it was some 22 years ago that one of my papers was published twice by the same journal, while I had mailed it once.
And I can understand your feelings. you were waiting for something, but got some thing else. If you search for articles on this issue in related databases such as ProQuest, JSTOR and the like, you find out more.
To be short, some times it is not by mistake...
