I have analysed qualitative data using the NVivo and QDA Miner software but I have never used any online tool for coding. However, even if a researcher wants to use an online coding tool, s/he must understand the reason and logic behind the codes generated by the tool, which could generate codes that could be different from the researcher's a priori codes and themes, I guess!
I used NVivo and hand coding. There is a free program called Coding Analysis Toolkit (CAT) but for some reason, I have no idea how to use it. I also agree with what Syed said above. You have to understand how to extract the information. You never know what will emerge. There is also MAXQDA and ATLAS.ti
Dedoose is exclusively online, and they charge a monthly fee (but only for months in which you actually use the program). Also, ATLAS.ti now has a cloud-based version, but I assume that you have buy the regular program in order to get access to it.
I have used Dedoose and it operates in basically the same way as any of the other major software programs, such as ATLAS, Max, and NVivo.
