This book was recently recommended to me by a faculty member and I found it to be a significant aid in understanding for an outsider looking in to the problems and triumphs of the family of a rust belt steel worker. It was eye-opening in many ways, and deserves consideration for your project.
I have not as yet read it, but one of the stories submitted to our collection called Children of Steel (short fiction by people who grew up or lived for some time in steel mill towns) is called Appalachian Apologia. Must be a literary allusion to your text. I hope you get to read it in print.
Hill Billy Elegy sounds like the issues in Jeff Manes' story!

BTW, did you lack fiction from your region and culture in First Year Comp literature anthology? I did and it was not until I was a junior English major taking D. H. Lawrence (son on a Nottinghamshire collier) that any stories took place in homes like our among a family like ours.
