We train in diverse clinical environments but could offer alternative experiences. I am an intensive care scientist and trained for three years across adults, paediatrics and neonates ICU as part of the MDT.
As part of my daily practice at the PICU, I encourage young medical students and residents, as well as other specialities like nurses, clinical pharmacists, social worker and dietitian, to get involved in research and explore new dimensions.
For those of them who are really interested, I offer guiding them in the process, and frequently leading up to a mutually beneficial research project.
I too work in the PICU as a certified child life specialist, and provide mentorship across collaborative, multidisciplinary research projects. I have previously gotten to work with clinical research associates and that was a Godsend - to have trained staff interested in the research side of the work, and with the dedicated work time and resources to do so.
Perhaps it is worth noting, since we are in an international setting, that in the UK healthcare scientist (a group that includes e.g. Clinical Scientists, Biomedical Scientists, Perfusionists) are group of healthcare professionals who perform a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and not just a group dedicated to research in the clinical setting.
