I think that much 'success' that is talked about is wishful thinking or politically motivated. Technologies are instruments that can help to improve things, but more important is the political will to achieve improvements. What is good for the environment not necessarily helps poor people. I do not know what ISRO is doing, but I am aware that peripheral regions in India such as Kalahandi are often neglected and poor / marginal people are anyway often forgotten when deliberating about change. 

Kenneth M Towe sir, Thank you for your comment. I extremely agree with your statement  population growth is a major problem. I think that balance is required between these things. As the population is increasing We must increase the role of people for protection of natural resources and other issues. Other wise the situation is going to get worse.

With new innovations in technology and business models there is a hope for next generation models that are 100% recycled, no pollution, negative impacts etc… but we are not there yet.

Several UN studies such as the SAVA bassin Commission, have been able to analyse and predict the impact on land use and watercourse management. By using computer modeling, it is posible to evaluate the present use and the impacts of alternative uses.  i.e., the difference between growing corn for ethanol and growing crops for local consumption.  This type of analysis has been used in several nexus river bassin management plans in transboundary rivers in Africa, thereby allowing people to plan long term impacts.  Population growth is one of 3 elements in assessing climate change impact, along with efficient use by cleaner Tech  and changing habits.  Massively replacing internal combustion engine cars (ICE) by electric vehicles (EV) in China, Norway, solar trains in India, etc) renewable energy replacement projects (Stanford U 139 countries project) and many other projects, help plan a path.  Changing people's habits, offering affordable alternative solutions, (reduce reuse recycle and compost) instead of sending to a landfill (see Ellen MacArthurs Circlar economy ) is another important.  

We may not be there yet, but things are starting to move.  These are interesting times.

It was an enumeration. The absence of any action will definitely  not help. Cleaner air , water and environment,  as well as better management of soil depletion  factors will help people, just not overnight.

Many of the problems referred are because of ever increasing population and also the greed of the human beings in uplifting THEIR quality of life, without bothering to the adverse effects to the environment and natural resources.

The agencies like ISRO or any research Institute through the application of science & technology can only study the problems and provide solutions to the Government or the decision makers and the implementing agencies. The ground level happenings is totally depends on the actions or in-actions of the implementing agencies/Administrators. It is also true that implementing agencies may not always go by the recommendations of the research results, as they will have their own priorities and preferences. Researchers are that way helpless as they are not part of the implementation (many times they do not want to be as it may disturb their research work) and the implementing agencies have no compulsion to accept the guidance/suggestions of the researchers. Whenever the research is done based on the request by the implementing agencies, such projects have become very successful.

Data from satellites, collected digitally, can be processed with specialized computer software yielding accurate, timely and useful information products which inform decision- and policy-making. At global and regional scales, thanks to space technology, knowledge of the various components of the Earth system including its atmosphere, land, oceans and ice is improving.

Certain geological features are only visible from space. For example, today’s advanced radar technology can detect slow shifts of the Earth’s crust. Likewise, after certain natural disasters take place, remote sensed images provide the most rapid and accurate information about sites which may not be accessible over land. The Geological Applications of Remote Sensing (GARS) programme strives to reduce the natural hazard risk affecting local communities and to manage groundwater resources. It fosters the coordination of lithological mapping, knowledge transfer, database management, landslide and volcanic hazard mapping.

As you cited about Bundhelkhand, Don’t blame nature and technology for the drought/water crisis in Bundelkhand .  Severe water crisis is not new to Bundelkhand but its rulers had found ways to tackle it. To drought-proof the area, the Chandelas and Bundelas, the Rajput clans who ruled these areas between the 10th and 16th centuries, built a network of tanks and ponds to harvest rainwater in good seasons. Many of them lasted centuries and some are still functional. But thanks to the State apathy in maintaining them and encroachment by the public, most have been destroyed. A report in Down To Earth says that the Centre has spent `15,000 crore in the past decade to create water-harvesting structures. That includes the `7,000 crore package for Bundelkhand announced by the UPA . With this money, over 116,000 harvesting structures (700 check dams and 236 minor irrigation projects) were constructed in Bundelkhand between 2006 and 2015. But the impact of such structures in harvesting rainwater has been limited because of the bad construction quality and wrong location.

In this way, though they are not visible to the naked eye from Earth, satellite systems will play a critical role in supporting the achievement of the  Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

I appreciate your posibalism think. I also thankful to space technology. Because Satellite sensors, RADAR, SONAR, LIDAR etc these technologies are giving momentum to our ability to do smart work as well as getting very detailed and precise information/data from depth of the sea to the atmoshphare. And I am not blaming Nature and Technology. I am serious about nature, so I raised this issue here to reach any healthy conclusion. So, it would not be logical to say that I am blaming Nature. Yes, there are lots of project completed or on going in bundelkhand region to reduce the primary problems and so many rainwater harvesting sites have also been created as you mentioned. But those sites have been selected without any good technogical knowledge, while that expenditure is also very high and we have so many satellite sensors to identify weak areas of the earth like lineament so there are no benefits found. Therefore, I would like to say that there is imbalance between technology and implementation. Prasad sir mentioned few bullet points about this imbalance and he highlited very correctly basic resion behind it. But it would be wrong to say that problems have been solved.

Everybody know that climate change already with us and we can see the pressure on natural resources because of over population. According to OECD (Organisation for Economic  Co-operation and Development) GHG emissions will grow by about 52% by 2050. This would rise globle tempereture by between 1.7 degre Celsius and 2.4 degree Celsius compared to pre-industrial level. We already facing the impact ofGHG on monsoon pattern, productivity, water resources and quality of life etc and facing the disasters. In the end, I mean, the emphasis is on expansion of the technology equally importance in its implementation.

Thank you for sharing attached picture. Yes sir most confuse climate with weather. This is a big question indeed that, How many know how much the climate has actually changed? But there are so many evidences found by International Agencies. Such as; Warming ocean, Global temperature rise, Shrinking ice sheets, Glacial retreat, Decrease snow cover, Sea level rise and extreme events etc. NASA also highlighted about this globe issue.

Just in the last 650,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat, with the abrupt end of the last ice age about 7,000 years ago marking the beginning of the modern climate era — and of human civilization. Most of these climate changes are attributed to very small variations in Earth’s orbit that change the amount of solar energy our planet receives. The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is extremely likely (greater than 95 percent probability) to be the result of human activity since the mid-20th century and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented over decades to millennia. Disaster have always been happening, But due to climate change their frequency has increased.
