I am planning on doing research in a country where abortions are criminalized I want to know how to go about the ethical consideration. I am a masters student.
Yes, I agree with Medard this is a very good topic to study, although sensitive but worth the efforts in investigating it. I am not aware of any studies so this justifies your work. For ethical considerations that depends on your design and your sample: is it going to be women only as participants? or do you want to include health professionals? Good luck
Here are some studies. If you search "Latin America - Adolescence - Abortion" nad better if you do it in Spanish "América Latina - Adolescencia - Aborto) you will find much more information about this region.

Profile of abortion in Chile, with extremely restrictive law
Since Holland is a small country, cant women easily cross the border to any of the many neighboring countries where abortion is legal? In Denmark 27% of pregnancies are ended by induced abortion and in Sweden 20% of pregnancies are ended by induced abortion. Are you saying that in Holland it is illegal? Or do you mean Ireland? And more to the point, women can now buy Cytotec, or Misoprostol or methergine pills online anywhere in the world and take it to cause an abortion, and it works. It seems to me that your research is outdated , and a shame to waste time, when time is so valuable and there are so many large gaps in basic obstetric research that have never been researched- such as what is the rate of very fast/precipitous labors? How often does / can taking 20 mg of Vitamin B6 prevent the first three months of nausea of pregnancy? What is the rate of women aborting pregnancy using Cytotec and which websites provide it ? What is the best way to inform women about their health and pregnancy?
thank you all for the contribution. my research is going to be conducted in a country where abortion is a criminal offence and and not in Holland. Young women have no easy acess to internet, and more over basic contraceptives themselves are not easily accessible and women can not travel to a neighbouring country to get an abortion because they are probably faced with many other challenges indoor to get access to that safe abortion.
I am curious why you are doing this project. The answer to your project is known. Women die from illegal abortions. Abortions were illegal in every country since the beginning of time and women were doing them and a certain percentage died from them and others became infertile from the infections and for many, the pregnancy continued and they had the baby. There are movies documenting illegal abortions and their results. This is a very well documented phenomenon and not one that needs further research. It is regrettable that this is still going on and of course it is a horrible experience for the woman. What do you hope to accomplish by yet another study of this regrettable situation? Why not buy 1000 doses of cytotec or methergine and supply women with it so that they can avoid their current predicament and then give them a questionaire as to their experience?
