Thank you for sharing the article. It seems to be an interesting one to read. We are also working in VANETs in both protocols development and prototype design. However, our approach for using smartphones in VANETs prototyping is a second options.

Though i believe it might be a really good idea to explore and a sound investment for industries to look into. However, smartphones are usually limited by its transceiver module, i.e. transmission range and receiver sensitivity. The GPS/GNSS module may also put some limitation in the absolute accuracy of vehicles positioning information. This may lead towards some error, specially when it comes to positioning sensitive services, such as on-road active safety applications.

We are planning to use dedicated modules for transceivers, positioning devices and data processing units, to accomplish far distance communication between cars. At the same time, to have a bench mark for comparing performance with these dedicated modules when compared to other options, such as using smartphone.

It is true all that you say about the transceiver module, transmission range and receiver sensitivity. About the GPS/GNSS module, I think most of the smartphones nowadays have a great localization module that works really good.

I agree that if you want to create a VANET with real-time communications V2V you can't use smartphones, because these point to point communications are not reliable, however, there are other kind of functionalities like information about traffic jams, parking, etc that are possible with these communications.

Furthermore, the main problem to deploy a real VANET is that nobody have a OBU with good transceiver modules so, there are no nodes to communicate with.

This is our motivation to create a VANET using smartphones, if we achieve that a VANET with smartphones give users something interesting, we can reach a number of users to create a real VANET quickly.
