I am surprised to hear that and I have never heard regarding M. Xenopi in birds and especially in parrot. The most common mycobacteria in birds are mycobacterium. avium and mycobacterium genavense. Also there is a lot of case reports regarding isolation of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis from parrots with clinical and necropsy signs but mostly they were infected by their owners and/or their previous owners. For more help if you do not mind I really like to see macroscopic and microscopic lesions pictures in necropsy and histopathological examinations of the birds and need more information regarding the birds like age…. Also you need more history taking regarding its owners health status and the place where its owner kept it.

I anticipate this is far from my research field, but just by curiosity I took a look at the literature. In fact birds have been regarded as possible reservoirs: in the UK M xenopi has been found more often in seabirds than in birds from inland areas and is thought to be responsible for cases among humans on the coast (see Vassil St. Georgiev (1997).  Infection diseases in himmunocompromised hosts. CRD). It is also reported for European blackbirds (see p 127 in Hubálek & Rudolf  (2011).Microbial Zoonoses and Sapronoses. Springer). No details on whether birds showed clinical signs I am afrad.

It's why we are interested in this rare case, an M. xenopi infection in Parrot. We have detected M. xenopi by molecular test in steril sample. Identification of mycobacteria among other (saprophytic or not) is Under investigation.
