I am considering using auto-ethnography as the dominant research methodology or perspective of my masters research study. Any feedback will be most appreciated.
I have used autoethnography in a related subject to education. There are two variants called analytic and evocative. The former was more appropriate to my study. The main reference I used was:
Anderson, L. (2006). Analytic autoethnography. Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, 35(4), 373–395.
It should be fine for a masters but if you are planning a publication I would advise you to be careful with the journal you approach because some do not consider it to be "proper" research.
My publication in Double Helix explains how I used it:
Samuels, P. C. (2014) Techniques for Capturing Critical Thinking in the Creation and Composition of Advanced Mathematical Knowledge. Double Helix, 2: Critical thinking and writing in the STEM disciplines, available at: http://qudoublehelixjournal.org/index.php/dh/article/view/20/154.
I've worked in a project where a colleague used this approach and I wasn't impressed due to the high level of personal subjectivity involved. It might be ok for a Masters project, but if you want to publish the work, that could be difficult.
