Interesting question for sure. I would like to stress some additional points of my own, related, as I understand, to the printing techniques and design principles:

First, how should the above questions be answered if we think specifically of maskless printing processes.

Secondly, since printing of several layers of organics may be difficult in cases because of the need to match solvents and the like, are there simplified designs (in terms of geometry) for printed transistors?

To explain the latter, thin film TFT designs seem to assume source, drain and gate to be in stacked layers (with dielectric and semiconductor layer in between), while there are designs for electro chemical transistors (ECT) suggested that have both gate, source and drain in the same layer. Are there other such simplified build-ups available, maybe also for non-ECT transistors?

thanks a lot for your comprehensive answer, I'll promise to go into it in more detail, but let me just ask an immediate question, when I look at your reply briefly, it seems most is TFTs. In tems of the principles according to which these work (and assuming that TFT only describes what it translates to, and thus a geometry rather than a principle), would any of the groups you have cited consider electro-chemical transistors? And either way, how would you generally judge the relative status and potential of these.
