Consider the work of EcoAgriculture Partners' Sara Scherr for a well-grounded understanding of the issues faced at the landscape scale of ecological interventions (http://www.ecoagriculture.org/).

From a perspective of policy and projects more grounded in the eco and cultural aspects of place (i.e. terroir) you should look into the work of DTR-IC led by Claudia Ranaboldo of RIMISP ([email protected])who primarily works in Latin America but also in Europe recently.

Kindly post back any interesting findings because this is a valuable holistic aspect of development that is worth considering.

At the 2014 EAAE congress in Ljubljana (http://www.eaae2014.si)  we had a special session on "Social preferences and incentives in the provision of public goods from farmland".

In Austria, there are several evaluations regarding the "Austrian programme for an environmental friendly agriculture" (ÖPUL - Österreichisches Programm für eine umweltgerechte Landwirtschaft), which is quite prominent and well accepted, unfortunately most of it, as far as I know, only in german...

In Ireland a good example is the Burren Farming for Conservation Programme which is well described on the Commission's website http://ec.europa.eu/environment/nature/rbaps/fiche/burren-farming-conservation-programme-bfcp_en.htm.

A landscape approach to research requires holistic rather than reductionist approaches. I and my colleagues have done this mostly through coupled on ground and famer interviews. Farmers normally manage their fields in a landscape mode, so gaining their experience(s) has proven fruitful
