With respect to auditory hallucinations, most relevant to psychiatrists, I do not think any part of the brain produces hallucinations, rather the brain does its best to (mis)interpret aberrant external or internal auditory sensations. Rather than go into this theory in any detail here, it can be immediately and concisely dismissed by citing published cases of definite brain damage in the presence of normal otological function that generates auditory hallucinations. Incidentally, the otogenic theory applies equally to psychotic and non-psychotic hallucinations.
