A "wicked problem" is one that is ill-formed, complex, and resistant to solution. When coupled with problem based learning, these can form great opportunities for engineering students to draw from a broad educational base (beyond the technical). In our program's senior seminar, we asked our students to address challenges associated with the Mosul Dam (see linked paper). This learning exercise was well received by the students and provided the desired effect of integrating their technical engineering knowledge with social, economic, and political understanding. We will be doing more of this in the future and are searching for other complex problems for our civil engineering students to wrestle with.

What are some "wicked problems" that you have had civil engineering students develop solutions for? What are some that you think would be good to consider for this learning opportunity?
