I've recently graduated with a first class degree honours of BA Sociology and Criminology in the UK and I am wondering what is the best way for me to launch my career in the research sector? I do want to have a career in research and I am taking a gap year from doing my masters. However, there are many positions that require years of research experience -- which is difficult as I do not have much, only within my degree. For instance, in my second year of university, I conducted a virtual ethnography on online 'stan' (an extreme word for stan) culture which got a high grade. Should I publish this for instance?
I have worked part-time throughout the duration of my undergraduate studies, but none of those are involved in the research sector. I also found that there are various terms that indicate someone is a researcher of some sort (such as research assistant or research associate etc) and require a masters. It is incredibly difficult -- I wouldn't mind perhaps volunteering and assisting someone on their research??
As a senior professor in the dept of Social Anthropology for more than 30 years, I would like to suggest you to go for research - Ph D choosing a particular topic of your interest. Your research will guide you what you actually intend to study.

Publishing your research on stan is good, but advancing on your study would give you more opportunity to meet with your research desire.
researcher, who does not have published in peer reviewed journals articles, has very little chances to catch a good scientific position. So, yes, first you can try to publish your work. Second one is to make your master degree. And third — networking (active participation in conferences, working group etc)
