Biodiesel fuel was come into existence in the year 19xx. Still the research is going on this field. Why even gaining so much popularity it is not commercialized on large scale? Always their are some initiative by government and policy makers but end up with poor results. Can we say that biodiesel still has the potential to become future fuel? Where the biodiesel is lacking and what are the new research areas in biodiesel to be explored?

Research in this area has not been proven commercially feasible and economically viable. Cheap and sustainable raw materials (alcohol and lipid feedstock), effective heterogeneous catalysts that offer full benefits of heterogeneous catalysis (physically and chemically), economical effective efficient continuous synthesis route, are yet to come. Till then, it would remain difficult to attract investors.

the pressure it places on food supply - finding viable biomass to make biodiesel from.
so i would think the efficiency of biodiesel off biomass or bio source that does not directly compete with food supply.
and making the process cheaper/ more efficient overall will always be a winner.

I think that the future of bio-diesel & bio-fuels will be more bright provided that farming for food takes priority over energy farming with the latter being investigated to find more plants "or better algae" that produce inedible oils (such as Jojoba oil ) on reasonable scale.
Biodiesel is one of the most promising alternative to petrodiesel. It is not getting its importance as the market price of petroleum is still low and most of the research works are confined to commercially costly resources. So, if the research on cheap but promising resources can be done, its price will reduce. As the resources of biofuels are biological entities, they can reproduce and for this purpose they are the most renewable ones. As fossil fuel will vanish some day, biodiesel will have its time to prove itself. But research at the bottom level and technoeconomic analysis should be done. I have done a work on unused algal biodiesel. Please go through it. I think that will help you.
