Smart measures should be taken to guarantee a good quality-of-life for the dwellers.
In the transportation domain, do you think that the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have a role in these measures? and when do you expect such a role?

The role of the UAV is going to be mainly related towards traffic data collection, since it provides greater utility than traditional traffic counting approaches, especially at intersections within urban regions.
I agree with you Yasan, and I have no doubt that UAV will be developed into air cars in future, which can run shuttle services within smart cities with landing facilities provided at rooftop of buildings

I agree on the importance of the role of UAVs in data collection in several domains. The first mentioned domain is traffic control both online like a traffic officer and offline in statistics manner to further improve the regulations and logistics of the traffic control. The second is the surveying of data and the monitoring of activities in different applications like construction or climate management.
Moreover in my opinion, the UAVs could provide the networking coverage where land towers are not available in natural disaster control and emergency response as well as provide the extension of coverage in normal situations.

Indeed, one of the biggest advantages of an aerial transport system compared to a land transport system is the costs of infrastructure. In land systems, there are extra costs of preparing and maintaining the roads, stop stations and parking areas. While in aerial systems, there are no costs of corridors, also parking areas and stations could be provided after some modifications to the buildings of the city.

In my humble opinion, the challenges that are slowing down the civilian applications of UAVs in cities are the safety issues, regulations, and economical impact of a large-scale deployment.

These are the main issues that you have point out. Other than these are the interaction of UAV with other aerial objects. The increased traffic in the aerial environment will affect the operation of aircraft, helicopters, etc and create much more complexity. Studies should be conducted to optimally fit the UAV.
