one can conduct continuous comprehensive evaluation. These may involve observation checklists for the specific procedures, their documentation and presentation of patient assessment, appropriateness of clinical judgement made in a shift etc.
As students are assigned to clinical areas they are supervised by a faculty member who accompany them all the time and thus, use anecdotal records of their behaviors. Behavioral rating scales are used for each rotation. Students are also required to submit clinical logs and present case studies. Preceptors from the clinical areas assist in the evaluation by the use of reports.
Thanks for these answers but I was wondering if anyone uses a specific competency based assessment tool to assess clinical skills. Otherwise via observation etc, it is possible to have a wide variation in responses depending on the assessor, their background, skills etc..
specific competencies are established as concerns to be observed and developed among the students. As per competency, there are specified skills that should be developed among the students that the clinical instructors must be able to attain. Competency checklist is used to record and evaluate the extent of the skills has been achieved, and becomes a basis for measuring the performance of the student, and likewise whether the clinical instructor has to design other measures to provide more time for the student to improved more his/her performance.
I agree with Lucille. Compiling a competency checklist is useful, With this technique, students can be "checked off" as knowing and being able to perform a particular skill. There are probably some standard checklists out there, but at our school, one was compiled to reflect what we teach, specific to each class or clinical experience.
I also think the use of a clinical log can be helpful, not only to determine if a student has had as opportunity to perform a certain skill, but they can also reflect on the experience, and include some self-evaluation.
