X ray streak camera is the recognized method but hard to implement in a limited lab. Embed an axial length of 125 micron fiber optic and monitor with a PIN diode into a low Z trans Z amp to keep up response time, record with O-scope. events will be obvious. Even CJ formation can be identified. Add a second offset fiber to estimate front curvature. Blacken fiber with lamp black if sample is relatively transparent to eliminate optical overrun effects, usually not an issue
